![]() ![]() There was A LOT of drama going on in this book (drug abuse, animal cruelty, bullying, class struggle, family secrets), so I’m assuming the second book will make sense out of everything, though we’ll have to wait until next year to see. Something to note: THE INITIAL INSULT is the first book in a duology, so it’s left open-ended in regards to the mystery of the missing parents and other points. I’m not sure that being inside Cat’s head was necessary. There was also a third POV from the character “Cat,” whose voice was confusing. None of the characters were particularly likable, but I’m glad there was a dual narrative between Tress & Felicity, so at least we could hear where both were coming from. This book was strange and dramatic, and gruesome at times. So in The Cask of Amontillado style, Tress plans to wall up Felicity, brick by brick, in Usher House’s coal chute, unless she finally admits what happened to Mr. Tress’s parents disappeared seven years ago, and the only witness was Felicity, though she’s buried any memories of that terrible night in her subconscious. In Amontillado, Ohio, at the condemned Usher House, Tress Montor devises a sinister plan to get information out of her former best friend, Felicity Turnado. ![]() ![]() THE INITIAL INSULT gives a modern YA spin to the imagination of Edgar Allan Poe, taking inspiration from several of his classic tales of suspense. ![]()

![]() Each of them are making their own choices, and all have unique traits, that would have changed the events had they not been there. ![]() The cast of characters in her door world, plus her original world are well crafted and bring so much to the story. Similar to the children we've met before her, but unique enough to be truly hers. ![]() As with book 2, we are following Lundy through her door, to make impossible choices over the course of 10 short years. I absolutely adore the way this series is laid out. With each book that leads us through a door we get to the see the world that meshes so well with the child, it becomes more apparent how hard this choice is to make. ![]() So many doors and choices, how can one be sure? In particular it is the story, told through brilliant visual imagery, of any refugee, migrant, l’étranger or displaced person leaving a homeland to make a new life in a strange land. Without words, this graphic novel has all the hallmarks of lasting literature in that it explores the human condition through the plight of one man and in so doing explores what it is to be human. His hundreds of pencil images tell a sophisticated tale of migration. Classified as a picture book, as indeed were all prior works by Shaun Tan, this book is far more than that. Australian picture books enjoy enormous success nationally and internationally but nothing prepared the literary community or the reading public for The Arrival by Shaun Tan. ![]() ![]() Fortunately for Mina, she has a mother who understands her perfectly, knowing that the only thing "wrong" with Mina is that maybe her brain is wired a little differently from most other people's.
