![]() ![]() so long as it gets exciting again, and so far this one has delivered there. It's not always a compulsive page-turner, but I kind of appreciate the slower-paced bits. There's a nice ebb and flow where every so often the story spikes in excitement and then allows you to recover for a bit before taking off again. The story's not finished yet, of course, but already we've shifted from jungle-tribe slice of life to fantasy fetch quest, and I'm not at all sure that's where the overall arc of the story will land. I think the author's playing some funny tricks here. C'mon, dude, give me some flowing locks and cheekbones that cut, will you? I will say that the one place the descriptions fall down in when he's describing his characters: he doesn't. There's a nice balance here between prose that disappears, letting you effortlessly into the story, and more artfully constructed passages that catch your eye and make you go, "ooh, that's pretty." The descriptions of place, emotion, and (of course) food really get me grounded in the story and give that just-enough feeling that lets me be both immersed and still imaginitive on my own. It's criminal that this author doesn't have a larger following. Wander the Lost gives those hard-to-find fantasy vibes I remember from when I was a kid: the sense of awe and discovery that expands your mind and takes you someplace new. It's been a while since I've read something that grabbed me as hard as this story did. ![]()
